Alison Riske (@2.55) vs Angelique Kerber (@1.53)

Our Prediction:

Angelique Kerber will win

Alison Riske – Angelique Kerber Match Prediction | 10-09-2019 07:00

Chloe Paquet lost in the first round of qualifying at the US Open. Kenin and Paquet have not played before and Paquet has shown no indication that she is much of a threat to her higher seeded opponent. Kenin is a top 20 player with a solid game plan against most opponents. Sofia Kenin fought through to the third round where she was thoroughly outclassed by a resurgent Madison Keys. She will be able to execute without much difficulty.

Angelique Kerber had a disastrous US Open campaign where she was eliminated in the opening round by Kristina Mladenovic. Kerber struggled with her serving and managed to lose vital points throughout the contest to fall behind. Kerber has dropped out of the top 10 in the world and the German will be desperate to turn things around in the final few months of the season. In general, things have been tough for Angelique Kerber as she has only won 1 match since the start of Wimbledon.

Riske defeated Garbine Muguruza in the opening round but was outclassed by Jelena Ostapenko in the second round. Alison Riske has a very strong record in China with her biggest results coming at the Tianjin Open and Shenzhen Open. Alison Riske had a very strong campaign at Wimbledon as she made the quarterfinals but following that result, the American has not produced any big wins and that will be hugely disappointing for the player. On the other side of the coin, Alison Riske enters this tournament following a modest US Open campaign where she was eliminated in the second round.

If she doesnt she is vulnerable and will be partially relying on her opponent to make mistakes. Kerber owns their head to head with a comfortable 3-1. Kerber will have to take occasional chances. Angelique Kerber and Alison Riske have met four times on the WTA tour. Riske is not as consistent or adept from the baseline as Kerber, but Kerbers natural inclination towards passivity in rallies can be her own undoing. The only seeds of doubt for the fifth seed in Zhengzhou will be from her 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 loss to Riske on grass in Mallorca, Spain, the only match the two have contested in the last five years.

Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick Angelique Kerber to win this match. Riske is strongest on grass and she has shown her problems on hard-courts as she struggled during the North American leg of the tour.

The World No. Kerbers best Grand Slam result came when she reached the semi final of the US Open and Wimbledon in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Kerber, a runner up in Sydney last week, defeated Jamilla Gajdosova of Australia and Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia en route to the third round. 9 reached the fourth round of the Open in 2013 and will be looking to at least match that record this year.

Angelique Kerber vs. Alison Riske - 9/9/19 Zhengzhou Open Tennis Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Kiki Mladenovic, now ranked 54 in the world, is a two-time grand slam quarterfinalist in singles and the three time champion in doubles. Mladenovic is a better player than Ying-Ying by any metric, but if she fails to engage with her match, any player can expose weaknesses in her game and exploit them. Her poor form in singles is illustrated by the fact that she has an even 1-1 head to head with her opponent, Duan Ying-Ying, who has never been ranked higher than 60 in the world and is currently outside the top 300.

Riske, on the other hand, hasnt lost a set in the tournament and has only lost six games in total on her way to the third round. The 23-year-old from the United States achieved her best Grand Slam result when she reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2013.

The other question: how far can she go at the Zhengzhou Open? Paolini, by contrast, did not make it out of qualifying. She also reached a career high ranking. The question isnt whether or not shell defeat Paolini, its by how much. Though her triumph in Istanbul was in April, shes still playing some of the best tennis of her career. Martic won her first title earlier this year. Petra Martic has never played Jasmine Paolini, but that might be because while Martic is currently ranked 117 in the world, Martic lost in the US Open round of 16 to an in-form Serena Williams.
